Chapter 8

It was Saturday night, and Brett checked himself out once more in the mirror, feeling like a high school kid going out on his first date. In a lot of ways, this was his first real date with Lauren. They never made it out to dinner that first night, he remembered with a smile, and the picnic a few days before didn’t count, though both were memorable.

This time they were dressing up and stepping out. Saturday and Sunday were Davie’s days off, so everyone left the ranch for dinner or fended for themselves. Typically, a bunch of guys from the ranch picked up their girls—or picked up some girls—and met at a small roadside dive called the Desert Rocks Tavern. What the place lost in curb appeal, it made up for in live music and food. Dusty and ramshackle on the outside, on Saturday nights the roadhouse rocked with some of the best local bands, serving up beer and some of the best Tex-Mex around.

It was an experience mostly enjoyed by locals, since out of towners probably wouldn’t have the nerve to set foot in the place. However, while every now and then a fight broke out, for the most part everyone just went there for a good time, and that was exactly what he was planning to show Lauren.

He hadn’t been to Desert Rocks in years. Marsha never liked the place, and on Saturdays she preferred to drive into the city for a fancy dinner or show. He’d sat through more lame dinner conversation between Marsha and her city friends than he could stand. He hadn’t been interested, and they had returned the favor, tagging him the silent cowboy who probably didn’t understand their discussion about whatever play or concert they’d gone to see.

Sometimes he’d been relieved when she’d gone by herself, and he took the opportunity to read or get some work done. Had Marsha been out on the town, screwing around on him even then? He hoped Howie was the first, feeling another punch in the gut. Shaking his head, he packed the negative thoughts away. Didn’t matter now, over and done.

Tonight he was happy, excited to be going out and excited it was with Lauren.

He was as ready as he could be. Freshly showered and shaven, he wore his black Wranglers, black western shirt, his best hat and comfortable boots for some dancing if Lauren was up for it. He felt more like himself, more lighthearted, than he had in a long while.

The demands of the ranch, losing his parents, raising Pete, and then Marsha, so many things had stolen his attention that the years had flown by and he didn’t realize how serious he’d become, how distant from the lighter things in life. Lauren was reminding him how to enjoy it all again.

He liked to dance, and he hoped she did, because it would give him one more opportunity to hold her, and to watch her come out of the carefully constructed shell she’d so obviously lived in for most of her life.
